Abstract
The study was to compare dietary intake of ¥ø6 and ¥ø3 PUFA between farm and sea villages and to observe the differences in plasma levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-Cholesterol and lipoprotein pattern, platelet fatty acid profile and thromboxane B2(TXB2) level, fecal bile acid and neutral sterol profiles. Dietary fat intake was assessed by 24-hr recall method in 238 subjects (20-64 years of old) in the residents of farm and sea villages in Chunbook province of Korea. Platelet TXB2 was assayed by RIA method, and platelet fatty acid, fecal bile acid and neutral sterol profiles determined by gas chromatography method.
The residents of sea village consumed less saturated fatty acids(C14:0, C16:0 C18:0) and ¥ø6 fatty acids(C18:2, C20:4), but more ¥ø3 fatty acids (C20:5 and C22:6) compared to those of farm village. Plasma levels of total cholestrol, TG, VLDL, LDL were signifcantly lower but HDL-Chol was higher in the residents of sea village compared to those of farm village. TXB2 content and the relative % of arachidonic acid(AA) of platelet were lower but the % of EPA and DHA was higher in the residents of sea village(p$lt;0.05). The fecal excretions of total bile acid, deoxycholic acid and copratanol were reduced but lithocholic acid increased in the sea village(p$lt;0.05). However, there were no significant differences in the level of primary bile acid (cholic and chenodeoxycholic acid) and other neutral sterols (cholesterol, coprostanone) between two villages.
In conclusion, dietary ¥ø3 PUFA had more beneficial effect to prevent cardiovascular disease and colon cancer by reducing the risk factors. Therefore, it could be recommended to consume more fish and its products in daily life.
